Newcastle Herald

Tuesday November 21, 2000

THE Grinch is having a green Christmas.

Jim Carrey's live-action version of Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas took in a whopping $US55.1million ($A106.54million) in its first three days in US movie theatres.

It was a record for a non-sequel or prequel, and if the figures are confirmed will be the fifth-best box-office debut ever.

The animated Rugrats in Paris: The Movie opened in second place in the US at the weekend with $US23million ($A44.47m).

Charlie's Angels, the No 1 movie the past two weekends, slipped to third place, followed by Arnold Schwarzenegger's cloning thriller The 6th Day.

Fifth was Bounce, a romance starring Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow.
