THE final instalment in the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy set a new US box office record for a Wednesday launch, its distributor said.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King sold about $46.26 million worth of tickets in movie theatres across North America.

The previous record was held by Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, with $38.66 million in 1999.
